Hey guys I am glad they have something like this and glad I found it. My 8 year old son loves to look for agates, and any other cool things. We live near Chehalis, Washington and want to know if you guys can help us find some good areas to treasure hunt? We are kinda new and have some spots but we have picked them dry. Looking for something within 100 miles. Thanks guys and hope to hear from you. :nono:

How far from home do you want to go? Within a few hours, you have all kinds of possibilities. There is also a book (the name of which is escaping me right now) about rock hunting throughout Washington. I'm sure if you go to Amazon and enter those key words you will find it. It is a few years old, but most of the information remains good.

Are you a member of a rock club yet? Washington has more than I can count on all fingers and toes. My club is doing a Green Mountain / Kalama field trip on April 20th for Carnelian. That's pretty close to you. If you get your dues in before that then you and your son could participate. Kalama is an easy rockhounding site as many Carnelian and Quartz points can be found sticking up out of the surface of the ground. Especially after a good rain!!! It's on private logging property though so you must go with a club that has been granted permission.

I think the book Susan is referring to is Gem Trails of Washington. Amazon has it.

Actually, it is "Gems and Minerals of Washington." Thanks, Krystee, you motivated me to take a look! While wandering Amazon, I saw one covering Oregon and Washington--2012 date, I have no idea how good this one is.

My sister in law has a ranch over there and I've hounded a bit near the Little Naches River over east of you at Naches , WA but that's probably more than a two hour drive plus time on forest service roads. Pet wood, thunderegg matrix (similar to rainforest jasper) and t-egg deposits over there....Mel

The Oceanview and Himalaya mines in northern San Diego County let people sift through material from the mines. The cost is about $70 per person. I have done each mine and came away with a couple of good pieces from each. You can find green, pink and black tourmaline, kunzite and quartz. Oceanview's website is www.digforgems.com. I think the digs are usually on the weekend.
