I freehand everything.
I try to base the layout on the pattern in the stone, sometimes working around fractures to allow me to get a cab when otherwise I might not be able to.
In this case, the right side of the stone had a pit reveal itself as I had started so I ground the side away and liked the way it fit with the opposite side so I didn't round it out.
