They are super fine Fossilman. The flintridge is a tough act to follow but i think the coral is nipping at it's heels.Lake Newnan is not far from camp in Florida where i find Marion points. Both very similar.
Sweet.Look up Sonny Anderson sometime. He is a famous collector of points similar to your pro knapper man made for you.Probably the finest newnans in the world. Most from coral.
If you get a chance, take a bigger pic of the Newnan. That coral was unusual if i remember correct.
That orange coral was yellow/brown/mustard color before i cooked it.From a huge coral sticking out of a vertical wall in the river 8 feet off the water.A heavy rain came and i was able to pull next to it in the high water and cold chiseled about 30 good pounds of the rich skin off of it.It has been the color source that i have learned to cook into bizarre colors.

Very neat!!! I watched a few videos on knapping... they make it look so easy, but it's pretty obvious it's not:P.

James yes I have seen obsidian that shade of color...I have some Russian obsidian too,its a shade of black, till you hold it up to the light, than see that its clear streaked with black streaks...Its made into a point too.. This summer my cousin is suppose to give me a frame of old arrowheads that my Uncle Henry had found in Montana, they are Crow and Souix Indian points... I love fossils, but points "old and new" take a close second on my list!

The kicker is,he is new at knapping.I like giving new people in any group of work a chance to test their skills..I think I found a winner at what he does...Stand up young man too!

Ok... there it is again... on the "Newnan", HOW do they attach that to anything without it sliding right off the top?!

Yes! Ok, I get it... they use 2 pieces of wood that are flexible to tighten around the base of the piece and grip it. I was just wondering why the blade wouldn't wiggle out if pushed side to side, or pulled straight back out on the mounting. I would think that used for hunting, if there's nothing holding the blade on that grabs hard, you'd have a really hard time pulling it out of animal leather, the blade would just stay stuck in there. And I didn't think blades would be disposable, especially big ones.
I obviously have no practical experience with it, just didn't look like a logical design without the little barbs in the back to help anchor the heads to the shafts. The dovetail just makes the most sense to me.

Splitting the stick and sliding even a triangle head in the split and wrapping it with gut creates strong holder. The stick can cover a lot of the blade-as long as the point and the blade is exposed to get into the hide the rest is history

Thanks Helen & Jim. I always wondered myself. Makes me think a couple of arrowheads, a couple of metal pens some twine and epoxy and you have a single use weapon suitable for safe travel.
