Just one of the native cactus blooming one of our rock piles in the yard. We have a lot of cacti here on the ranch. This one's pretty cool as it tends to rebloom a couple of times when it rains....Mel

Lovely mammilarias! I've got a few of those (not wild), they are pink flowering. It amazes me how large the flowers are for the size of the plant. What a huge expense of energy and resources for reproduction.
Thanks for posting those, Mel. Jean

What a huge expense of energy and resources for reproduction. That statement reminds me of having kids. The flowers are pretty!! The only thing that grows wild up here is pine trees and weeds.

Any person that grows cactus knows what they are. There are a lot of different species in the genus. James is right, Latin - Mammilaria = nipple cactus. (yeah, you got the gist, Geoff) Jean

Jean is correct. One scientific name is Mammilaria sulcata, though it's also known used to be Coryphantha sulcata....Mel

Nice cacti Mel. Thanks! Jim, your virgin spider lilies are really sweet too! In my lexicon I would translate mammalaria as "breast cactus". Nipple is more titillating but I think breast is more visually correct. lol Now, in the spirit of this naughty thread, may I bring you Amorphophallus titanum

*LOL* We have a beetle here that shows up in the yard quite often. It's called the Strange Virile Bycid, Strangelia virilis. Want to guess what it looks like? *L* Hint: We've nicknamed it the wiener beetle.....Mel

I think. One last thing.Do you know why they call it a hymenocallis?Or what physical attribute suggests such a desciption? I must say that Titanica was a show stopper.
