When I lived in North Dakota,I lived in an area that was close to Canada(like a rock throw away)...A river they call the Souris River, runs from Canada down to North Dakota, making a loop than heads back into Canada, probably a 150 miles or so of route.
I fished that river in the northern valley of North Dakota(fished it enough to be blindfolded and still tell ya' where I was at)...
Anyhow back to the story, one year the river really dropped from the heat and all.As I was walking the banks, fishing for "Pike",I started seeing bones in the shallow waters.
So the rock and bone snoop I am,I always would pick them up.As the summer got warmer and the waters lower I started hunting the bones alot.
An old timer told me they were "Buffalo" bones from the 1800's........He told me of stories of the valley were the main road to cross the river would be so full of Buffalo, that the people and their horsed wagons would have to camp for two to three days, before the Buffalo would finally head north to graze somewhere else...Than they could cross with their wagons..
He said there were 1000's upon 1000's of buffalo there...I seen pictures of the Buffalo that the trappers started shooting for the hides, leaving the meat to rot(sickening)!
So the river would flood and claim everything in its path....
Thats how I came to find Buffalo bones in the river when it was low in the summer months..
One month,I spent everyday on that river in one area, where most of the bones were coming up in droves!
I found whole teeth in the mud in the river and better bones too....
Here are the best of my finds from there...No I never did find a skull(odd I thought)...
Here is a Buffalo jaw with all the teeth still incased in the jaw....
Here are some of the Buffalo teeth I found..I gave a lot of them away,or traded them for something...
Notice the agate effect on a couple of them...
