That is some fine wood. It is so natural. Never seen such preservation detail. and the light colored piece would fool you as being tigereye. It splits in plates like wood-right along the grain

Is that not agatised petwood hence the clarity and better detail? I was told there was a huge difference between some of My collection that some were simply petrified and others were agatised or melted into a harder form of rock even though both were simply petwood nonetheless. I am not an expert but this looks like some of that agatised wood I have more than a regular petwood.

I think that there is 2 ways it can go oxquo. The best wood comes from the west and here in Georgia about the only thing petrified is our brains from too much humidity:>
The way i understand pet wood is that a stick of wood may rot or burn away in lava and leave a hollow spot that the agate completely fills called a 'cast'. A cast has little detail other than the outside shape.
To see the grain and detail you need a 'replacement'. Different opinions but basically the agate slowly moves in and fills the vascular structure. It does that with dino bone, coral, palm wood, shells and a few others. Most pet wood will have both fills and replacements scattered through out where rotten openings filled solid.
That was collected by Larry (Quartz) on the forum and i begged him to let me trade for that fine McDermitt, Oregon wood.
Welcome to the forum. I hope to see more of you and and photos of your casts and/or replacements

Really, he didn't have to beg, but it does make for a good story. He sent us some of his coral in exchange for some of our stuff, we are just as pleased w/the coral as he is w/the wood, very nice mtl., and otherwise unavailable to us. Larry

I love that Jim begged for a rock!
That really does look like you could cut it in slices and form it into a guitar body. Sweet.
Gotta love it!

Amazing detail on that piece. I worked at a good photo. Ended up every photo was great. You found fine material Larry and wife. I know you are a methodical collector. That stuff is all picked up so it's all a dig.
