Over the summer I put in a new watergarden in the back yard. I had some rocks in a pile in the back yard that had been there for years from the previous owner and decided to incorporate them into the landscaping around the pond. Most of them were plain field stones and a couple of sandstone chunks too. As I moved the larger sandstone piece it broke in half (due to weathering) and at the split, I found a cool fossil on the plane. It is not so much a raised fossil or impression as it is more of a rust-like stained pattern in the sandstone. It almost looks like an oak or hickory leaf shape, but it also appears to be a whole plant as there are smaller leaves that come out from the center opposite from the large leaf. It is now the focal point of the landscaping as you approach the pond. Here are a couple of pictures...let me know if you think it is a fossil or just a cool rust stain in the stone.
