It is pretty. Myself, except for my muzzleloaders I like calibers that can reach out, and touch someone .419, or .500 work fine for my paper punchers. Hunting is black powder .500

Wow, I know my bf said that AR is completely customizable, but that's beautiful crazy! That's so much better than the pink one he pointed out to me last week

Every time I see a AR-15,reminds me of a good buy I passed up!!!! I was just fresh out of the Army and a guy was selling out every thing... He had a AR-15 with four 30 round clips,1000 rounds of ammo and a case, all for $250.00.....At that point I didn't want anything to do with that weapon.... I still kick myself for that move-LMAO That one up on the page is sweet though...Thumbs up I have a buddy in North Dakota that was in VN and loved the M16 so much he bought the civilian style and that's the only rifle he hunts with,he hunts deer, elk, yotes and pronghorn....Never missed and always game in the freezer...

I love the wood and think it looks fantastic, but not so crazy about the case hardened receiver... I have never liked that look and think a good bluing would have been much better... just my opinion.
I was too in the same boat as you Fossilman, when I got out I was done with the M-16, it was just too much hassle to keep it in a functioning condition in the field, I passed on a few and bought a good stout hvy barreled 308 bolt action instead.... boy is that sucker heavy !!!! but it's a solid plinker out to most distance than I'll need, just a bear to carry out through them long walks in the woods!!

I'm trying to get enough saved to get an AR-15 upper in 300 blackout so I can hunt deer with it.
It's more or less the same utility as a 30-30 but in a lighter, more modular (and semi-automatic) package. The great thing about the blackout is it fits on a standard AR lower and uses the same magazine. The subsonic loads (should I buy them) are still enough to cycle the action (subsonic .223/5.56 won't cycle the action without further modifications) so the blackout can be nearly "silenced" with a suppressor while still having the umph to take down mid-sized game at 200-yards and less.
I own [an undisclosed number] of AR-15's set up in a couple of ways, some with heavier barrels and match triggers for varmint hunting, some as more typical carbines for the range or if needed to stop bad guys, but would love to have something set up for deer as well. In Colorado and Wyoming you have to shoot at least .24 caliber for any big game so the 300 would be ideal for closer stuff.
Even though the gun in the article is prettier I wouldn't probably buy the "AR-10" style guns because once I get to .308 I'm trying to get my hands on the M1A (M14 style) which I prefer for the heavier calibers. I own some bolt-action .30-06 rifles which are fine, but I prefer having semi-auto.

I know this sounds strange as I was always been a guy who loves wood and old timey looks, but since I was in the army with the M-16's I've grown to love the metal and plastic high tech equipment and looks. All these new synthetics are tough, weatherproof, and durable and I think they look kind of cool. I also am crazy for all these wood laminate stocks which I think look really pretty. Think the wood on an AR platform just looks kid of weird and AK like. All this is coming from a guy who likes his boots as gaudy as possible of course so maybe it's me who's weird *L*.
John, Springfield Arms makes many beautiful versions of the M-14 308 rifles. Pretty expensive but lots of very neat options..Mel

Browning made and still makes their BAR, but as a civilian hunting rifle with clip and chambered in 30-06, not sure on 308 but that would be cool if they did. A childhood friend of mines father had one and took many deer with it, it was his go to gun for deer hunting. I think it had a 4 shot mag on it. If I had the cash I would be looking into a BAR for myself in 30-06 too they are an awesome rifle and with a scope are capable of some spectacular long shots.

Mel, yes Springfield's version of the M14 is the M1a. That is what I want in addition to the 300 Blackout. Before the stupid magazine limit went into effect here in Colorado I bought a number of mags for this gun so I could own them legally; in spite of not yet owning the M1a.
Originally Springfield built the M1a from military surplus M14s then they just started manufacturing M1a parts for the rifles.
They have a great reputation for reliability and accuracy and I'd love one or 5 to keep my ARs company.

Mario yes the BAR is a nice gun as well. The buddy I hunted with this fall shoots one chambered in .270 and it is a great gun.
If money were no object I'd love to have a BAR but I'd probably put it just behind the M1 Garand which is another rifle I really like. Chambered in .30-06 of course.
