Hi im new to the forum and my name is Ben. I really hope i get to know all of you. But anyways what this thread is about is this sunday i was at a garage sale and i saw a rock tumbler kit and thought how i have always wanted one. It came with the Lortone 3 lb Tumbler, and all the grits and stuff, Some really cool and strange rocks, brand new never used. But best of all i got it for only 15 dollars. I got my first load in it right now, I will post pictures of it when its done. And i just wanted to introduce my self and tell you guys the good news.

Ben you will find great people here. They will help you when you need it. This is a great place to start. Don't be afraid to post whatever is on your mind. nothing is dumb in here. None of us were born knowing all the answers to tumbling and beyond to lapidary. I have asked many questions, Sandman1 has asked question,Michiganrocks,Cookie,Banjo creek and much much more have asked questions that none of use has even though were dumb. This is the place to start and be. Welcome! We welcome you advice and input.

Welcome Ben. By starting your first load of rocks, You have gone past the point of no return. You got an excellent price on your "first" tumbler, but be fore-warned, it won't be your last tumbler. And, the only dumb question is one not asked!!

Hey, Ben, you got a great deal at that garage sale! Tumbler, rocks and grit for $15.00! WOW! But, as stoner says, it won't be long before you are in the market for another tumbler! And, if you find another one for $15.00 everybody on the forum might decide to chase you down and "stone" you! Welcome to the forum - lots of great folks here, some WOW pics of rocks and tons of excellent information! llana

welcome ben. great starter tumbler at a great price! can't wait to see your pics. the 1st stage is the hardest to get through as it can be lengthy but it will be worth the wait.

All right Ben, that's a sweet deal! I've had my wife watching the garage sales for some time now and found nothing. Apparently nobody in my area has ever messed with rocks before. Stay with it and don't get discouraged. Just don't hesitate to ask for help. Soon things will click and you'll be cranking out rocks with the best of us! ;D Ron

hey ben i think the norm for most is let them run 7 days and check see if they need another run in the same grit or can move on i usually let them go a few weeks in 60/90 with a recharge every 7 days till they look good to me might take more or less when they look good to you clean and move to next grit seeya ---john

I'm currently running Malachite in prepolish in a brand new 3 lb Lortone barrel. Checked it last night and it is REALLY foamy, but the rocks are lookin' great! Don't know what caused the foam, but it may be a good thing!

My grit stages really aren't foamy, however, every batch I have done I have had the polish stage foam up alot, but I still get great results. Tami

I think the foam problem is a combination of new barrels and particular rock. When I purchased my 33b I washed the barrels in hot soapy water to remove any oils from the molding process before I used them. I had no problem with foam at all. When I purchased the 3-1.5 I did the same. But each one of the barrels foamed during the first use. After the first run in them I have had no more problems with foam. Except in the peridot I am running. It never fails to foam no matter what grit stage I am running. And it also has a horrible smell. So I wouldn't worry about the foam. I would suggest that after you have ran your stones for about 7 days, to dump the whole thing, rinse your rocks well and recharge with new grit and water. It shouldn't foam again.
