That's a neat idea. Does the jewlery making process destroy the silver plating or does it remain?

I buffed most of the silver off of these pewter floral edges with cotton wheel coated w/tripoli Rich. This pan was yellow brass. Some have heavy silver. some thin. some yellow brass, some white, some are of copper and some are 18 8 stainless. And some are thick and some not. Great to keep you from getting stagnant doing cookie cutter repetition using same material over and over.

Nice pieces, very original...Are the silver plated base pieces less expensive than buying base metal sheets from Rio or is it to get the embossed parts like the floral edges or am I missing the point here altogether

Yes Charlie it is a cheap source of raw sheet material. I have been buying that stuff for a couple of dollars a pound at the copper recycler. The price is way way cheaper. And i have to say that the metal the casted back 40-60 years ago is some fine metal. The floral edges are just a side benefit. They are pewter and soldered to the tray and then silver plated w/the rest. I find some trays made for instance by some of the Rogers families that have very heavy silver plate and some cheaper stuff that is much thinner plate. The copper base seems to be cheaper grade than the light colored brass base. It is a a brass that is almost silver in color i guess. I have a pair of giant shears for sheet metal that can cut 6 inches in one bite. I put one handle in a vise and operate the other handle while feeding the tray chopping it into jewel size pieces. Then throw them in the tumble for burr removal. Looks like this after 3-4 days in a rotary tumbler. They were tumbled with 1/2 by weight polished granite pea gravel and only water They are longish. So i can cut them down further and only have to file the reduction cut. They will be hammered, i love to form the stuff on a rail road anvil. This is a typical tray w/pewter edge ornament. This tray is too pretty to butcher. But the ones at the recycler have a lot of abuse
