So the copper serves as a stop to make little plugs.Right?

When you try to cut tiny pieces of coiled silver solder the pieces are pretty difficult to "contain" and they fly all over the place. The copper soldered to the pliers "traps" those tiny pieces of solder inside of the pliers. connrock

Neat idea!
What solder did you use to attach the copper to steel?

Great idea!!!! Yes, those little snips fly around like a cat on a hot tin roof. I learned real quick that I wanted a pair of those cheap solder cutters. Best $16 I've spent in a long time. If I had seen yours or thought of it before, I might have given it a try.

Custom made tools is one of the things i like about metal work. Jigs clamps anvils pinchers cutters smashers twisters manipulators catchers texturizers scratchers sanders filers etc
and the rest of Tela's tools.
Especially the small tools in jewelry.

genius - pure genius.
An inspired and simple solution to a pesky problem. $2 and 3 minutes, problem solved.
Nice.

Neat idea, much more sophisticated than my practice of arranging things so the little chips fly into the opening of an old Gerber's baby food jar. "Whatever works" is my motto.

So Rick, do you set the jar across the room and keep score for three point bank shots? Even with the pliers and wire in the jar I still lose some. I'm going to have to make Tom's design.

I was trimming LED leads with kidlet when we built the LED Menorrah project. One lead took off at warp 6 or greater, not to be seen for a week or so. Then wifey spotted it. It had flown across the room to embed itself 1/16" into the drywall 10 feet away! That is dangerous! (we wear/wore eye protection)

The few that fly away are recovered when I locate the mother lode of cabs that soar off into terra incognito when the dop wax gets too hot.
