Okay... I am totally striking out find a local shop here in Orlando or any clubs that are active. I am trying to find out if there are any "hard" rocks in Central Florida that are harder than 5 on the moh scale. I have sent emails to a couple geologist at UCF and have not heard back. I went to the About.com Geology website and haven't found any information.
My goal is to take my 5 year old and 7 year old out on a hunt and let them find some rocks and pollish them. Once we learn a little, I want to introduce my Cub Scout troop to this.
If anyone knows of where I can find some information or what (if any) type of hard rocks I can find in sunny Florida.
Thank you.

Hi jd, I am from Ohio, but I know of several knappable rocks from Florida with plenty of hardness that will tumble nice. Agatized coral, beautiful stuff, many different colors from blue to red, high silica so it will gloss up great if you find solid pieces without a lot of cortex on them. Also there is a Florida chert that would work also, not as pretty as coral, but still nice stuff. I also know a knapper from down your way, I couldn't get his website to come up for some reason, but it is "http://thenaturalearth.com/" if he is close to you, get in touch with him and ask if he has any scrap flint or coral that you can use for tumble rock. He is a nice guy and I'm sure you could pick some up for a reasonable price. Mark Condron is his name, you can tell him I sent ya (Don Roberts from Ohio). I hope this is helpful, good luck buddy, talk to you later, Don
