Greetings All,
I finally bought 10 lbs of coarse grade (8/12) walnut shell to us as a filler for the prepolish and polish stages. I tried the plastic pellets a few times but to me they're too much work to sort from the rocks and to much worry to let them get washed into the storm drain or dumped in my yard. I figure the grit, polish, and slurry are not even an issue to put down a storm drain or into my sinkhole, but I can't go dumping plastic pellets. The walunt shell I can dump, heck there's a ton more sand, silt, leaves and sticks and stuff going into the storm drain, my puny amount of rock slurry is having a completely negligable effect next to that. Anyone out there who's not happy using and reusing those pesky little plastic beads, consider walnut shell instead. I got mine at Covington-engineering.com for $18.00 per 10 lbs, shipping was a bit much, about $11.00. But like everything else buying walnut shell in bulk would be pretty cheap, so long as I could drive and pick it up instead of paying shipping. Yea, another QT12, QT66, and 300 lb barrels of 60/90, 120/220 grits. The 220 and 600 I suppose I can buy at 50 lbs since they don't get used for multiple goes through a stage. Same with the polish, and I need to get some higher graded aluminum oxide polish, and some tin oxide polish, and probably some 1000 mesh silicon carbide for those really stubborn rocks. Maybe 20 lbs each. And a couple hundred pounds of walnut shell. That's, oh, coming up to a thousand dollars, and that wouldn't count the cost of driving to pick up the grit, which would probably be another $100 given the price of gasoline these days. hummm...methinks towards the end of this summer I'll be doing a little road trip for some grit, and buying a new machine or two. Time to start saving up ;D
