Welcome aboard Geoff. Best tip I can give you is to read the posts in here about the subjects you're interested in. Ask lots of questions. You'll find that our members are happy to give answers, but be specific in your questions. Lapidary is such a broad subject that without knowing what parts of the hobby you're interested in, it'll be hard to get answers.

Hiya, Geoff! What corner of the world are you located in? I would suggest (if you have one near you) joining a rock club. Most big ones give classes on lapidary, and have lapidary equipment that members can use and learn on. Everyone has to start somewhere.
They are happy to share their knowledge with you, and most clubs also have field trips for members to bring home material.
Welcome! Jean

Welcome aboard Geoff. I think you'll find lots of good info on this forum. People here are great about answering questions if you have any. Tumbling is a lot of fun but it seems to lead to more expensive lapidary hobbies. Before you know it, you'll be be asking about the perfect grinder for making cabs and after that you will want to know about the best slab saw.
Good to see new members .

Thanks for all the advice. I just got a 3lb rock tumbler from my local harbor freight. I also just got a rotary tool with an assortment of diamond attachment. I have been cleaning up the outside of my old geode all morning . I also order a 1.5 lb unsearched rubies and sapphires bag. I hope there's some good ones in there . Anyway Thanks for the tips everyone much appreciated.

Greetings [tinkervirus] Geoff firstly may i welcome you to RTH Forums from the other side of the pond! Lapidary = 1: A job title; 2: a person that cuts & polishes rock. My advise keep a tight rein on costs it can spiral-out of control very quickly & join a Rock / Lapidary club, "The Vug" & "Inland Lapidary" (Sticky #1). I note that you bought Harbor Freight junk tumbler, Lortone 3 series belts & motors are direct replacements that most people here on RTH Forums get from "The Rock Shed" (Sticky #1). I have a 3lb Beach (UK) £300, Lortone QT 12/66 £320, Lortone C300 £580 rotaries & 2x Viking Vibrosonic £80 2nd hand (Diamond Pacific) virbrating tumblers Evans (UK) 8" wet saw (1.5" thick max cut) £150 2nd hand. Please check out my Sticky's below. -- Please click images to open larger images in a new Tab, same with everything that is Underlined! I hail from (The Barony of Seabegs) Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire, U.K, where aliens (15mb) sometimes come for a visit & about 4 miles west from this monstrosity! Sticky's: their contents are resource information 1#: Vendors worldwide (2mb), 2#: How to use the forum, 3#: How to identify rocks & minerals, 4#: Save money on expensive grits & polishes, 5#: Aussie Lapidary Forum: Rock Tumbling Guide!

I am hopeing to be able to go out to find some great stones either to carve or just add to my collection soon. Any tips?

Hello & greeting from Ashtabula, great to see another NE Ohio rockhound on here!! We are in a barren rock waste land up here on the shores of Erie, but as was mentioned- down in Flint Ridge there is some excellent material to be found from all the pics I've seen and I will be making my first trip down in the next month or two, and up in the UP of Michigan there's a good bit of collecting potential too. I believe Summit County has a pretty active rock club, so you might want to check them out - and if you know any good rock shops around Cleveland let me know, I have Noema's Gem's that is local here in Ashtabula - super nice folks but they can be pricey on a lot of stuff. Welcome to RTH & post lots of pics!!

Hello and welcome. When I first got on here I just scrolled through and read the threads in the Totally Rock Tumbling section. Lots of good info stashed in there.
