How can you tell pet wood apart from agate or jasper? I've been looking at some pix on the dealer links on this board, and noticed that some of the pet wood looks a lot like some of the stuff I'm tumbling that I've loosely classified as agate/jasper. Thanks!

I'm not sure. I have alot of pet. wood and most of it you can tell that it is wood by the way the piece still looks like wood. i have some that ytou can't tell it from other rocks. I have one that is as green as you can get and mostly looks like a rock but i was told that it was absolutely pet. wood. i guess you just going to have to trust them and hope that it is.

Hi Brett -- unless I had a piece that looked like the end of a fireplace log or something, I don't think I'd ever be sure I was looking at pet wood. Maybe I'm just a big dummy or non observant. Probably both.

i guess the best way to find out if it is wood is to buy a piece that looks like it. On e-bay look under petrified wood and you'll see alot. Also see it can be exspensive. If you look at the picture page under my first rock show you might be able to see a couple of my pet. wood pieces.

Sometimes it is difficult to identify smaller pieces of Petrified wood, too me the smaller pieces look alot like some agates I have seen. Now if you look at a large piece of petrified wood you can generally see the rings or grain of the wood it once was.
