So here I am in a rock forum: wow, I used to be in a mushroom forum. Anyways - here's what I'm doing and then I'll ask questions...
I got a border collie from my daughter, so I've been taking him to a deserted beach in Southern Oregon for the last two years and have many pieces of petrified wood. I want to start polishing them. Is this a good idea?
And secondly, I often hike a ridge-line trail where old growth had been harvested many years ago. It's been clear-cut and the soil is a tan color of clay. People have been digging holes there. I've done the same and have found what is basically gray gravel. I really wonder what they're looking for.
Today, after a lot of rain the week before, for the first time (after many hikes here) I noticed a lot of shiny black sand in the rivulets and brought it home to put in a pan.
Anyway, I'm an old English teacher about to become a grandpa in a few weeks... Looking forward to browsing the message boards!

Welcome to RTH! Collecting and polishing the pet wood is a great idea, especially if you are getting it for free. You'll see many many varieties that others have tumbled/polished and some of them will blow your socks off!! Can't be of any help as to what others may be digging for on your hiking trail, but if they're digging there must be something there that's worthwhile! Congrats on the forthcoming grandchild too.

Polishing the pet wood seems like a better idea that polishing morels. It sounds like you like hobbies that involve walking around, looking at the ground. Do mushrooms and rocks grow in the same places, so you can combine hobbies?
