Rich - if my material could look like that cab, I will for sure! I though fossil lovers prefer their specimens as untouched as possible? Jake, that specimen looks huge! It almost looks like a mollusk, I thought it was more of a barnacle...it is beautiful though, almost looks like a flower Actually it's slightly larger than a silver dollar. I cropped the pic to show more detail. I found this guy selling them. His first page gives a little info about them. www.fossilsforsale.com/site_arc/index.cfm?action=item&prod_id=5795&I also think your last pic is Oolite. I have a large hunk of both the Oolite and Stromatolite similar to yours sitting on my front porch, waiting for decent weather to slab them.

So you recommend slabbing?

So you recommend slabbing? It can make some very interesting cabs. I'd do a scratch test on several areas first, to make sure it's agatized all the way through. Same for the Oolite. Oolite is notorious for having soft spots. If you're like me, and like to keep a specimen piece, save a nice sized piece of the end nub. You can polish the cut side, and leave the rest natural. I'll post a pic of the Oolite cabbed.

Not a good pic, but this will give you an idea of what to expect from a solid piece of Oolite. This is the material that I have. I still have a hunk that weighs about 10 lbs.

Wow Jake, that is beautiful! I doubt my piece will look like that, but thanks for the fantasy
