I found this specimen and was wondering if it is a fossil of some type. If anyone could advise, I would appriciate it!

hard to tell from the photo.. are the little circles defined with what looks like cell formation( can you see the cells?) almost looks like tube agate in some ways. Can't see the details. If you could post a couple photos from different angles it might help. thanks!

I'm thinking stromatolite.

While it might be a Stromatolite, it is unlike anything I've seen in the midwest. They are very common here since they were a major reef builder during the Devonian. An easy way to tell is to look for layering. I appologize for not being able to post the document about Stroms but here are some screen captures of information that I put together for my wife's classroom. Here are some finds from northern Michigan (look for the layering a.k.a. laminae) also look for the "bumps/mounds" a.k.a. Mamelons on the upper surface Also notice the indentations on the bottom another example Of course none of these are beach washed. I have to find pics of those. They look very much like sedimentary rocks though. I hope this helps

tkanvil - I looked at the link you sent and was blown away by you tumbles! You can do some incredibly beautiful things to the crusty beginnings above...

Are you going to cut that crusty beginning? If so I think we'd all like to see the inside. If its solid it would likely make a rockin' cool cab or three. Again I'm no expert but your last pic looks like it could an oolite to me. commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Calcario1Ez.jpg Whatever the case very cool.

Also notice the indentations on the bottom This one looks very much like the fossilized coral in Michigan. It looks like you can see pretty clearly defined coralites (?) on the surface. The layered others pics are stromatolite, but this one looks different. Maybe James / jamesp or Rob / Jugglerguy or someone can jump in here as they know coral.

The first three pics are all of the same rock. The top has "bumps", the bottom has "dimples" and you can see the layers in the side view.

And just when you thought you had it all figured out. Not all stromatolites are created equal. From the Southern Sahara desert I bring you a different type of stromatolite. This is actually the bottom of the critter. The top is just a rounded lump.

Rich - if my material could look like that cab, I will for sure! I though fossil lovers prefer their specimens as untouched as possible? Jake, that specimen looks huge! It almost looks like a mollusk, I thought it was more of a barnacle...it is beautiful though, almost looks like a flower
