Howdy folks, After yesterdays ride, I ran the saw till it overheated and the power feed shut down again. Got only a few more slabs cut but here are the pics....Mel Another shrinkwood. Good color but the slab that came off fell apart in the saw so I quit cutting it. Brand new blade so it was just too dang risky. Found two hunks of this while going through my piles the other day, really nice Wingate Plume.

Those are both beauties Mel. I have some shrinkwood from North Dakota that I am gonna have to slab. It is either shrinkwood or petrified rootwood as it is really distorted. It is almost all black though so it is harder to see the nice figure.

You should find some great palm down Livingston way Dave. A riding buddy of mine and her boyfriend manage a huge hunting ranch down in those Rio grande gravels around Eagle Pass. I have an invite to rock hunt but haven't gotten around to it yet. Shuld be good wood and agate down that way.
At one time I had a pretty good pile of Wingate. Have either cabbed, sold or swapped most of it over the eons. Since the site was down by Death Valley, I imagine it, like most everything else, is closed off now. Problematic material as it tends to sometimes have soft spots in the yellow zones, but I rate it as one of the prettier plume agates and always watch for it in estate sales.....Mel

That Wingate Plume is awesome! Do you know if the source of the Wingate Plume still accessible to the public? Larry C.

Sorry Mel, If I had finished reading your last post I would have seen that you had already answered my question about the accessibility of the Wingate Plume source. Larry C.

Larry, I believe part of the wash is on the Naval ordinance testing station ( China Lake) and the rest is probably in the park now. As usual, a bunch of roads into these areas, like the Owlheads etc have been closed. These areas never were easy to access so now, I imagine it's all closed off. I've not seen any new Wingate being brought out ever. Most I've seen was collected back in the late 40's and early 50's....Mel
