this stuff seems to have hard and soft spots. and the hard stuff is all that will polish. "got it from the rock shed". was a bit of a let down after all the time spent on it .
P.S this is just what i think!! not writing this in stone!! don't want to get barked at like james did in that one post! seems like some one on this board needs a doggy downer to mellow out

wiz that's what happened to me on those leopard skin jaspers that after much research seem to have ryholite in them which is softer and wears away faster and won't polish. i'm still stupified by them. like you i spent so much time on them. they are sold for tumbling so i'm still thinking it must have been something i did wrong but i dunno.......they seemed to be going backwards and getting rougher instead of smoother i keep thinking there is some little secret to them...and i don't know it! kim

I think I know what you are talking about! I've been tumbling a lot of backyard rock and I have an abundance of stone that starts out tan colored, gradually starts revealing layering underneath, but then the white will often wear away faster than the other and is more porous. I kind of like my polish results. The hard rock took a great shine, and most of the other part shined up to some extent. The hollows where the softer rock wore away are interesting in themselves. A different effect from what I am used to, but not necessarily bad.

Hey, I missed these responses. Pix from me of my backyard rock? Hardly seems possible anybody would be interested! We've got the weekend coming up, I have been trying to get competent with the digital camera, so maybe I can finally get some photos up here. The backyard rock is interesting stuff! Got a batch going now that's getting the wearaway effect where the softer areas are. Soon to be done.
