Hello from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan !! I'm a relatively new rock lover first started picking only 2 years ago. My dad is somewhat of a rock hound. He really only sells his older specimens and cleans up Copper now but when he was younger had a saw which he sold to feed me !! Yes, I feel guilty : ) He gave me his agates and greenstones which I'm sure peaked my interest. I think he got tired of me bringing him all the leavites to see if they were agates or greenstones. My first tumbler should be in the mail today, so I'm super excited !! I've found it rather difficult to be as knowledgeable about rocks as I'd like to be I think because the vocabulary is so foreign. Maybe I'm expecting too much only having been interested for 2 years. Anyway, I'm here to learn and maybe share some pictures and adventures of collecting in the U.P.......

welcome to the forum. What part of the U.P. are you in? The mention of greenstone and agates makes me guess the north west. We live below the bridge but pass through the U.P. to get to our cottage as often as possible.

Am I the last troll to say welcome? I'm in Alpena, but I have a sister in the Keweenaw peninsula and my mom and another sister live in Marquette. I'll be up to visit all of them at the end of July. I'd love to hear about some new spots to rock hunt. I might go to the Grand Marais area for the sole purpose of rock hunting at the beginning of August too. I love the U.P.!

Thanks everyone !! Chuck, I was born and raised in Bruce Crossing but currently live on the outskirts of Chassell approximately 11 miles from Houghton. Rob you probably know as many good spots as me being such a newbie, but if you have any questions I can try to help. Last year, I fell in love with the 5 and 7 mile point areas, the mouth of the Gratiot River, and the LS shoreline by Sunset Bay. This year I've been doing some digging around in the mine rock piles and have made a couple trips out to Agate Beach in Misery Bay. I'm a little taken by surprise at how much I've come to enjoy everything rocks, and it feels like I am looking at rocks with every step I take. I think I've gone a bit crazy with it, as I seriously contemplated mining the asphalt in my school parking lot this year...lol....I think I would very seriously be happy living in a tent being a full-time prospector. I'm not naturally artistic, but I haven't discounted the fact I may need to do something more than create pretty flowerbeds with my treasures.

You're practically neighbors with my sister. She lives in Lake Linden. We're going up there for only one day in July this summer and we're spending in rock hunting. I can't wait!

Thanks everyone!! John, I bought a double barrel rotary tumbler. Don't know too much about it aside from it being a decent price and was sold from someone who seems well respected on a FB site. Does anyone have any recommendations for where to buy grit on-line ? Rob, yes, Lake Linden is very close to me. Also, not too far from LL there are fireworks in Copper Harbor tonight. If anyone is ever in the area around the 4th these are truly spectacular. They are unbelievable in fact. I will never miss them again after discovering them 2 years ago. Fireworks are sort of like you've seen them once you've seen them all, but Copper Harbor puts on a truly spectacular show. I can't even begin to describe it. Don't miss it if your ever in the area. I think we'll need to leave soon and hit some beaches and rock piles along the way. Happy 4th of July everyone !! Especially, to any veterans our heroes !! I sure thank-you for your service and sacrifices !!

I buy grit from two places. Kingsley North is in the U.P. somewhere, so you might be able to pick some up if you are near there so you can save on shipping. They had their 80 grit on sale and I bought 90 lbs. it was a really good sale and the grit works like 60/90. The other place I buy is The Rock Shed.
