Hi, I happened across this board today while looking for some info on rock tumbling. I'm a mechanical designer & photographer living on the west side of Washington State, about an hour from the coast. I took some chemistry and geology classes a few years back which got me interested in rock collecting etc. but haven't done much with it until my son got interested in it. I just bought a rock tumbler from Harbor Freight Tools and whether or not this was a smart purchase remains to be seen. My son (twenty years old) and I are really excited about this hobby. He's done some limited tumbling with a smaller tumbler he got at a yard sale, but nothing really major. Being a photographer I'm looking forward to shooting some photos of our finds and creations. A lot of my photography is commercial products and still life so hopefully this will be of good use. From where we live, we're only about 1-1/2 hour drive to Mount St. Helens so we go there quite a bit. There's a particular area where there was a big mud slide when the mountain erupted. We like this area because there's a lot of rocks for my kid to pick around and it's very open so I get landscape photos there as well. Since we're close to the coast, there's a lot of interesting finds there too between Washington and Oregon. You can actually drive on the beach for miles but we haven't lately since we don't have 4WD. The biggest challenge we have is we have a lot to learn. We want to go on some good rock hunting expeditions but are still learning and getting started. There's a lot of rock hunting maps available, but I suspect many places like these are probably very picked over. (?)

From what I've seen on this forum, you're in a great state to be rockhounding. I'm in BC, Canada, and recently got involved as well. Got 3 tumblers now and desperately need more to keep up with the hobby. Welcome.
