Thank you for posting that. A new use for jade and I see now how to lay the stone on a rope to see if it will ring or not. Way cool. Jim

That is stone age music for sure. Some people think that the stones of Stonehenge and the other similar prehistoric structures were set to play music when struck as well. I remember seeing a video about that (on here?) Jim, it looks like the rocks rest on a narrow board and the ropes support the ends as they are struck. I am interested to try setting my suspected Jade on something and using this diagnostic method as well. Manofglass (Walt) here on the forum, makes wind chimes from thin slabs of rock... many possibilities. This opens an interesting door! Thanks for the inspiration Juzwuz!

The slab of rock is placed on the rope at special node points so the note sounds better. These node points are usually around 1/3rd of the length of the slab but you can usually find it by trial and error by positioning the slab and then hitting the middle of the slab with your hammer and then repositioning until it sounds good. I've made a couple of marimbas which use wood for the bars but I think it's the same idea with slabs of rock. If anybody tries this with jade, let me know and I think I can give you some rough dimensions for the bars. I think the fine tuning would work the same as wood bars where you have to grind an arch on the bottom of the slab to make the tone go lower. Glad people thought the instrument was neat.
