Formal, yeah right. That is one word that really doesn't fit into my lifestyle... but anyhow!
I was fortunate enough to catch the rock hounding bug from my dad and grandma when I was just a tot. Grandma was a pretty serious hounder and spent a lot of time grinding and cabbing... When I was 7-9 years old, I remember sitting in front of the wheel with my little cab on a dop stick and grinding away... polishing away i guess. That is the last time i worked on a cab... but I've been picking up rocks and dreaming about cutting and polishing them ever since.
Ive moved a few times in the last decade or so, and each move involves lugging buckets and milk crates full of rocks around... and also just big boulders and such! Oh, and antlers... Im an antler junky too...
The last year and a half has brought some big changes to my life, including a divorce and meeting a woman that shares almost every passion I have, including rockhounding! Its been an interesting year and I loosened up a little and bought my first tumbler. I am in the middle of a craigsliste deal that may result in me having another tumbler... hehehe I wont stop there either. I figure I have to have a 12" saw... and Im gonna have to beg my dad out of his polishing station. I am not even sure what its called, but its got a couple 3 inch wide wheels... I'll get a pic of it soon.
If you've followed many of my first posts, you may have noticed I claim to love petrified wood about as much or more than any other rocks. There may be something to that, as I have been a lifelong woodworker also... building cabinets and furniture for a few years, but eventually moving into building custom longbows out of beautiful and exotic woods.
My passions... My Girlfriend... Elk... Hunting... archery... Rocks... the mountains... fishing... India Pale Ale! hehehe AND... of course, my two beautiful daugthers! I hope to get them involved in the passion of the rockhound...
Here are a couple pics that highlight some of my passions....
My baby Packing out our archery bull from this year:
And here I am with that bull shortly after arrowing him:
you may have noticed... the bow I used was not one of my handmade traditional creations... I do hunt with them, but did not have the time this year to keep up on my shooting... so I chose to go with the compound bow... as its MUCH easier to be accurate with.
Here is one of the bows... I build 3 piece bows that bolt together...
Some closeups that highlight the wood grain.... For some reason, I know you guys/gals will appreciate the natural beauty of the wood grain.
It also takes a lot of work to get the right finish, shine...or "Polish" on these things!!
