Jim, we have a blue flint here in UT, so it would make sense that what you got is flint. Wy is just a "stones" throw away, LOL. Sorry I couldn't resist.

I finished a few rakes for my sand gardens but I am thinking I need to put a warning on them. "Caution, if you leave the rake laying with the tines up you may drop a thumb on it and put your eye out". Okay, maybe not. The handles are only about six inches long and the tines are made from the handle end of fancy tooth picks. Have to admit that my son came up with that idea. Still not sure how I am going to put a finish on all this wood now that it is cold outside. The water based stuff is not good in a small enclosed area and the oil based stuff is highly flammable which won't mix with my propane heater. Any ideas? My ginormus miter box and saw. Cut tines. The process. I thought I had a photo of the rakes all sanded and looking nice. Maybe next time. The tines are not glued in but they are very tight and will only come out if they are pulled really hard. I had trouble forcing them in and I did not want to glue them because that way I can send extra tooth pics so the tines can be replaced if they get broken. The sand gardens have been pushed to the back burner because I have been doing a lot of Christmas shopping for MYSELF and making gifts for friends and the grand kids. They get to much "purchased" junk so I just make them things that will last a lifetime if they do not loose it. (happens often so I have to keep replacing) Jim

Those are looking good, Jim. I should have my "stupid room" warmed up and getting after things again if you want to bring those wood pieces down here fro finishing.

Thanks for the offer Russ, I may take you up on that. They don't amount to much but anything is too much for my little space. I have been wanting to get out to see you but something always seems to get in the way. Soon. Jim

Storm mtn. Jade. Just east of Joshua tree. Scott, ya gotta tell me which Joshua tree. California surely has more than one. lol jk Sorry I have let this thread lag. Lots of projects going on and my priorities change by the minute. Plus I have to try to work around my naps ya know The only updates I have at this time is that the teeth on the rakes are too close together (should have made one and tested) unless I find some real fine sand and play sand is not going to work unless I can come up with something to sift out the bigs and smalls. Should have bought the expensive stuff. Even concrete sand is way better than the play sand as far as even size goes. I thought about just dumping the sand outside by my steps but it crossed my mind that it would be easier to just dump it on the floor inside because that is where it would end up. Fish tank sand is all nice and even but I don't think the wild colors would go well with my gardens. If I didn't live in Tim-buck-efen-two I could buy sand for reptile tanks. When I started this project a sand problem was the last thing I would have guessed could happen. Today I did test the rub on poly finish that I bought and it looks like I will have no problems with it in my small space but figured out that there is a damn learning curve with something as simple as "rubbing it on". Rolled up, folded up and wadded up the soft rag and still had problems with the stupid thing (me) actually smearing the stuff around. Very thankful that I tried it out on the bottom and not the top. I am now thinking "brush it on" then "wipe it off". I am thankful that there are new things to learn then bitch about having to learn it. No happy medium. HHMMMMMMMM Looks like I am sitting her thinking out loud. It is three AM and breakfast is at four thirty so maybe I should take another nap. I don't think the one from nine thirty to twelve is going to cut it. Jim

rockjunquie, I have not forgotten and have done a little research but another eye lash batting might be necessary to keep me motivated. Jim

Small update. Little by little along with all my other projects that I have going on now. Thanks for all the interest and compliments. The one eighth inch plywood is warped so I had to add stiffeners to the bottom to try to get them flat. Isn't perfect but they are close to flat and I can add felt sticky buttons to them to keep them from rocking. Not to the end of the learning curve yet but I think one quarter inch plywood will be better and save a lot of work. Jim

It will take 36 of the little strips to make the side all the way around. That is a lot of little pieces to sand all the saw boogers off of. Jim

but they're both excellent ideas and they will be soooo nice to look at when they are done! Watching with interest.

Nice project. Like the wainscoting moulding, great idea!
Gonna make the avatar real? I think the color is off as well. Unless you've had it colored since I last seen ya, lol. (Seem to remember more gray, just saying...)

Things went good yesterday. The first lap of edge wood is glued on so today I will be adding the second and third at the same time. I put wax paper down so I would not glue everything to the table, clamped the base down so it would not move then started gluing the edge in place. I used spring clamps to hold the edge in place while the glue dried. With the glue I am using I have to leave the pieces clamped for two hours. It still went pretty fast and I finished the first go around. I could only put on three pieces at a time then move over. I finished the garden floor with the trim boards for sides. It looks pretty fancy even though it is just a rectangle so I blocked off a corner so I could add something there that will be outside the sand area. What I am going to put there is a secret for now but it is going to be so cool it will knock your socks off. (well maybe) I am glad there is some interest in this project and appreciate all the great comments. Jim
