My grand daughter's boyfriend is wanting me to make some pistol scales. I only have two stones, black jade and thulite that are big enough to make them. I doubt that this guy will want pink so I will probably be using jade if he can come up with enough money. I am sure this has been done before but I have not researched it yet. Has anyone on here done it before? Not totally black but this flashlight puts out 184 lumens so it can shine through a tree. Well, almost. This would be a pretty intense undertaking for me because of the way they screw on and the carved out places. Haven't taken the job yet but thinking pretty serious about it. I am thinking $200 but I would come down some for family discount if he wasn't such an ahole. Jim

I've never made pistol grips but have to wonder if polished jade will be too smooth for a good grip on the pistol? connrock

No more slippery than ivory! Jade carves nice and will make excellent durable grips. Jim, use a rubber washer under the mounting screws.

I've made a few.it can get tricky with the recessed indention in the back of the mounting holes to accommodate the screw bushings.ill post some pics to this thread later if that's ok

Jim from my perspective an ahole dating my daughter or grand daughter gets nothing from me but kind encouragement to grow a pair. But then, that's me.

arrowheadave, Any help will be appreciated.
Scott, thanks for that advice. Someone on another forum also mentioned putting a rubber backing on the whole grip.
Lee, he is the one that fathered my great grand son and was a stand up guy to start with but he has gone a bit down hill. My son's adopted nephew is taking care of the heavy work. Teaching with an iron fist. lol Jim

A few years ago a friend from the Porterville club was going to make colt single action pistol grips from Porterville jade. Think my buddy told me they came out pretty well. Certainly a durable stone. As a shooter myself, I don't think jade would be much more slippery than say, ivory or some of those faux ivory synthetics like I have on my Rugers. Many 1911 front and backstraps have checkering for added grip anyway. Mine all do, so a smooth scale would probably be no biggie gripwise.....Mel

And obviously tiger eye.ill find the pics of the finished product later.ive found that if you do without the screw bushings(the piece that threads into the frame)you can get tapered screws and countersink them in the top of the grip. Hope this helps Dave

Those are sweet Dave, especially the pet wood. If brittle stone like that will work there is no doubt that the jade will work. Thanks for posting them.
Now I may have to make a pair for my pistol. Jim

I was also gonna add that $200 is a good starting point.and then they go up according to material chosen.i don't forsee a problem with jade that's some tuff stuff.i also have to laugh when people ask"what happens when you drop the gun though?"if you drop your gun you've got more to worry about than a broken postol grip.me personally,I've never dropped a gun in my life.
