A couple of weeks ago, my daughters and I started a batch of petrified wood along with the rocks that came with the tumbler. We had just enough to make 3 lbs, 3/4 full. We let this go for 10 days, and then checked them. About 1/3 of the rocks were shaped nicely, but the rest still had some pits. So we pulled out the ones we liked and started the second round of course for the rest.
In cleaning the barrel, it became VERY clear to me why I will want four different barrels. It was nearly impossible to get the grit out. I didn't worry too much, because we were running the same grit again. But we now have a second barrel to use for the medium grit, and I'll get some more before we polish.
This second round also required that we break out the plastic pellets. They went in no problem. But last night I decided to check the progress of the stones, and they really freaked me out when I opened the barrel. I had forgotten that they were in there, and for some reason I expected that they would stay white. I couldn't figure out what these little bits of gray were. Did I tumble the stones down to paste? Oh, yeah. Pellets.
Those nasty little buggers were all over me as I tried to check out the rocks. Oh, well.
We'll check again on Saturday and see how we're doing. Wish us luck!

It's deja vu all over again.
