Picked this up at the swap meet a few weeks ago.
Although I couldn't tell you what kind it is (Don jakesrocks ?), I'm certain it is real. No one would go to the trouble of faking it, then encasing it in grainy sandstone. There's even some hammer marks on the outside where they broke it open. A lucky break, I'd say, couldn't have aligned it any better.
Well, it has to be worth the ten bucks I paid for it!

hahaha I was thinking "that is one ugly rock Jean, what is going on with you?" Then WOW. Jim Hahaha, you funny, Jim. Yes, I can see why you might have thought I lost it, lol. I am like a grasshopper at the swap meet, always picking everything up, looking in all the boxes. I am always on the lookout for rocks and stuff, Bob tends to stop at anyplace selling tools.
Thanks, Fossilman and agatemaggot. Yes, a large ugly bug!!! Now I have to find a way to display it, and keep the dust off it. However, he will point them out to me should I miss them. The best deals are people that don't have a clue about rocks. More knowledgeable people usually want more than I want to pay for them, but not always.
THAT is absolutely AMAZING!!! I would have been playing it so cool trying to pay the guy before someone else did. LOL! That is soooo sweet! I bought this from someone that buys estates and such, and resells without knowing too much about anything. We normally start shopping at the back of the swap meet, these guys are located on the first row. On this particular day, we went down that row first. Not a whole lot of people around at that time. I'm sure it would have been long gone had we done that row last!
That is one big bug! Cool find, and congrats are in order Thanks, radio. I've gone looking for them before (not fortunate enough to find any), and this is the first I have purchased.
ETA - That was fun, huh MrP? I think you are the only person that enjoys that as much as me! Easy once you know how.

Outstanding water bug fossil and score, rockpickerforever! Especially cool that you have the outer piece that it was encased.
