I pretty sure that 1000 grit is finer. That's just an observation though. Don't mark my words.

I couldn't find an absolute answer. One site talked of using tripoli polish after grit as fine as 1200 and this resulting same finish as using 2000-4000 grit.

Well, Tripoli is a polish; I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure it's a good bit finer than 1000 grit.
