Last week it was in the low 80's here in Arizona so I mowed my lawn. Yes, in Arizona, we have winter lawns. Rye grass. Well, anywho, I saw some wild Aloe Vera growing in a rock wall holding my front yard up. I began to transplant it up close to the house. While I was pulling and digging it out, an agate fell out. Well, I spit on it and it was pretty cool. I dug around a little more and found more agates! Well, one phone call to my bestie, Diane {drocknut}, and 2 days later my front yard was dug up! LOL. Not all of it but Diane was moving hot and heavy into my newly planted grass so I had to halt it. But yowzers did we pull out some awesome rock! Apparently an old rockhound lived here more than 30 years ago and his pile was covered by a foot of dirt! We found, all old stock, purple burro creek, botroidal hematite, brecciated chrysocolla and some unknowns. Diane and I know our rock pretty well and some of this stuff we have never seen before.
I know, I know, PICS! Well, I took some with my phone so I will try to upload on my phone. They will be here in the comments.
Morals of the story? 1} Old stock rock piles may be right under your nose and
2} If you tell Diane that you found rock, she will be there lickity split!

that's how I got started in lapidary friend told me about rocks in the alley about ten miles away 19th ave & Bethany I didn't know much about rocks but I grabbed a a couple bucket and drove us over then it was like just pick up everything I knew I hit a jackpot about 50lbs I went back quite few time & find stragglers. yep... some rock hound either passed on or had to move quick and the new tenants just threw the stash in the alley might have been the for decades

Fossil, we were digging up the new grass! LOL The finds were getting scarce so I stopped it before we dug up the whole yard! I worked hard on that yard and we dug up so much rock! I can't even cut right now cause we are in the 30's and 40's here in AZ. Crazy, I want my 70's back so I can fire up the tile saw! Sheri

Waiting for pictures!
How much rock are you talking about? A couple pounds or buckets full?
grass = collateral damage

In my neck of the woods, you can get a square yard of topsoil and sod for $10 to $15. You can't get a square yard of lapidary rock for that. I have to agree with captbob, grass=collateral damage.
