I finally got to play with my disc cutter and dapping set. I made 2 pair of copper earrings for daughter and granddaughter. The biggest challenge was to get the texture even on both of the larger earrings. I put the silky texture on before cutting the discs, but it was somehow more difficult than I thought it be to get a big block of consistent looking texture which would catch the light the same way. Hard to describe. I bought the recommended 2lb brass mallet for the disc cutter and still had to hit it a few times. I've seen numerous videos of dapping, but they didn't prepare me for doing it. You really have to do it a few times to get a feel for it. I kinda messed up a little on the first one of the larger pair. I got a bit of a dimple in the center. I can see that lots of practice will make perfect and tell me which holes and daps to use. The quickie pics are of the small ones being worn by granddaughter and larger ones where I am trying to show how great they reflect light.

They look great Tela, I always do the punch then texture then dap but I would think any order would work. Sometimes the texture smooths out after Dapping so I put the Dapping tool in the vice upside down and use it as a round anvil and spruce the texture
As for it taking more than one blow to o knock out a disk, just swing harder. OK I am shutting up now.

Love the earrings you created for your daughter and granddaughter, rockjunquie! What is the disc cutter tool that you used?

Love the earrings you created for your daughter and granddaughter, rockjunquie ! What is the disc cutter tool that you used? It's a Pepe brand cutter.

Very cool. Looks like you are getting the hang of it. Thanks, Diane, I'm workin' on it! I guess I just need more muscle behind that hammer.

That's a great, professional looking result. The effort you put in on getting the even finish has really paid off.
Try annealing before dapping: the metal will 'give' more - and dapping work hardens it so continuing to brutalise (I exaggerate but you get what I mean) hard metal will risk a split.

Thanks for noticing the finish. I love it and will likely do it often. I hear ya about the annealing. I didn't anneal these as they were 24g, but I can see that it wouldn't have hurt, at all.

Oh I was shutting up because of my smart a$$ed remark about swinging the hammer harder
