It may well be a form or gypsum and have pastolite inside or it may just have mud

the picture with the color will cut and polish in the coloered part the outer white part will be slippery and some will disolve . for a polished slab its ok but for a cab its too soft

It may be a variety of chalcedony or agate . I will try and pick some up the Tuesday if we can cross the river . I dont have any here as most of it doesnt cut . I gave away what i had for a friends aquarium

This stuff isn't shitty too is it? Now I am concerned that I hauled crap home. Mark Is that from Gemfields, near Goldfield NV.? I have 30# of some that looks just like that. regards bill

Is it possible that the initial deposit dried, cracked and then had an overlay with the material that is now left after the other material dissolved or eroded out?

Mark I have collected something that is similar from the mud hills east of Shoshone Ca. It is from the mud flows of the armagosa river. gypsum and borax and mud. Although it does not have the hard deposits and is will scratch with my gerber knife it is harder than you would think for mud stone. When I get home I will post some photos. ( it looks the same as what you posted. ) Roaming the desert of south ca. and nv. and loving it . regards bill
