It there a quick way to tell pale fluorite from barite from quatrz crystals?

If crystals, crystal habit. Google crystal habit and the species name. You can find pics of crystals of that species.

shotgunner is going to love this ... you can also checkout the specific gravity. Barite is a really heavy mineral, especially for a non-metallic mineral. Barite has a specific gravity of 4.5, where quartz is 2.7. Essentially, a piece of Barite would weigh almost twice as much as an equal sized piece of Quartz. However, hardness and crystal habit are a little easier to determine.

shotgunner - That's professor Wikipedia, or professor Mindat only. I wish I could say I had some formal knowledge, but at best I have a love of learning through obsessive Google searches. The truth is out there, hidden amongst all the lies.
PS - Saw three ring-neck pheasants under the neighbours bird feeder this evening. Their numbers are getting so strong that they are considering opening them up for sports hunting. Mmmm, pheasant under glass on a bed of wild rice. That will put a smile on your Avatar.
