Howdy folks, When the wife and I lived in Ojai, our neighborhood was actually built on top of old Chumash Amerind sites. When digging in the garden or whenever folks dug trenches for utilities etc, lots of stuff would show up. So much that sometimes folks would haul off trench dirt to sift it for artifacts. This stuff is the result of sifting some dirt and digging in the garden. The little drilled beds are tiny 1/4 inch clamshell beads, the gray beads are steatite, there are trade beads from the mission period, a couple of bone awls, a piece of a bone fish spear, and hollow bird bone beads. The leaf shaped point is a roadside find of some kind of frothy sinter and the small arrowhead is of local chert.....Mel

Very nice collection! I'm intrigued by the Chumash Mel. From my house I can see an area at the tip of the Santa Monica Mountains where there are several (protected) Chumash sites. I haven't had the time/opportunity to study the matter deeply but I can't escape thinking they're not really culturally related to most of the Amerinds to the north and east but trace their roots to the Polynesians. Their sturdy boats are considered by some experts to be almost identical to the sewn-plank construction of the Polynesian tomol. archive.archaeology.org/0503/abstracts/canoes.html

As you know I can loose my mind when it comes to indifference toward the ancient peoples so it makes me happy when I see the preservation of their work. We could have learned so much from them (not just here) but when they were branded as savages they were doomed. These people were intelligent enough to live on this planet for hundreds of thousands of years but modern man is going to kill themselves quickly in comparison because they think they are intelligent but all they are is destructive.
Thanks for showing your piece of history Mel. I have a box packed with a few goodies for you and it will probably go out Wednesday. Jim
