Last week I saw a sun-dog ... this week another I don't know if you're familiar with parhelia, but that's a spectrum in the sky / cloud, not a lens flare. I was watching the first flare sinking lower in the sky and then this happened! So of course this week I watched it drop to the horizon again... then ...

Thanks for all your comments.
I first saw a sundog about 5 or 6 years ago as I was a passenger sharing driving shifts with the Mrs... I nearly fell out of my chair! I won't say I see them all the time now, but 2 or 3 a year is not uncommon and sometimes, like this, two or more follow sometimes day after day. I'd say that the 2 in 2 weeks is down to pretty constant atmospherics.
I don't recall seeing them before that, but now I see them, I see them.
Now you know what to look for - pic 1, keep a look out. Sometimes one each side, equidistant. Rarely a semi-circular halo - more likely in the extreme cold as fossilman will no doubt attest.

Up here sundogs mean cold weather ahead. Took this last Jan. Could not get both sides in the shot, to much equipment in the way. Plus I was to lazy to walk out further.

Up here sundogs mean cold weather ahead. Great stuff bushmanbilly ... correct me if I'm wrong is that not also a sun pillar? You could be right with the cold weather ahead forecast - it just snowed!

It could be called that. Been calling them dogs my whole life. Have never seen a full ring around the sun up here.

I preferred the drilling rigs. Better pay and a day off schedule that one could plan around. 3 weeks on and 1 week off. Service rigs you might get a weekend off every now and then.

Learning new stuff. Awesome skies in cold country.
Looking at those guys out on that cold steel rig. Can not express how hurtfully cold that looks from southern eyes. North folks on winter rig, Florida folks reproofing a house in summer heat. Rough work.

They're definately dogs alright, but look at the sun. Unless it was just a lensflare, then the line going vertically up from the sun may be a sun pillar. Examples
