Is anyone running oil cooled saws indoors, especially larger slab saws? I'm in the process of acquiring my first saws and would like to set them up in my unfinished basement. I plan to use mineral oil for coolant. Do I need to seal off the rock shop area from the rest of the basement (where the furnace resides, etc.)?
I am planning on making some ventilation improvements, but I know most people use oil cooled saws out of doors, or semi out of doors. Thoughts?

Two of my Uncles had saws in their basements,if I remember right the only thing they did was run fans, that would steer the mists and etc towards the door, instead of the furnace areas.........

Mark/Marinedad ran his saws in the basement. Put Bardahls no smoke in the oil, I use about a cup in my 16 inch saw. It cuts back the mist bigtime!

No problems with my 12" Lortone in the basement. I do use Bardahl No Smoke along with Crystex (White Mineral Oil) If you have any problems with mist let the hood stay shut for a while and then add more Bardahl. it can be had at many local auto supply stores.

If you have major mist problems with mineral oil you: 1. are running way too much oil depth on your blade and hurling it everywhere or 2. You forgot to put the top down on your slab saw. I run my 12" slab saw with a homemade top for several hours everyday in my workshop (concrete floor peg board wall covering) and have no evident mist problems (yes I have a bit of oil film on the saw itself but nothing a simple cloth wipe off doesn't cure. The only advantage I might have over others is the dry dusty climate of New Mexico. I clean up drips on the floor with oil dri from Walmart and make many round trips from shop to house across a beige carpet, and believe me, if I was tracking oil from the shop on my shoes my wife would have noticed - no problem there so I have to say that mist is not much of an issue. I do suggest a top that does not just contact but rather overlaps] the saw tank (ovesrlap on inside). . . . So , I would not hesitate to put a saw in a basement, but with the proviso that you solve oild problems as they appear (if and when they appear). Enjoy the ride. Tom

Here is a hint for oil spray. When you think you have it licked, take on old irreplaceable family photograph and set it a few feet away from the saw. If you don't get it oily then you are good.
