A coworker is about to embark on a dream situation, and I am included. A friend of a friend called him today at work to say that his father had passed away leaving a complete lapidary and jewelry making hobby in the basement. He wants the basement emptied, ASAP. Some of the things there are at least 6 tumblers, 4 saws, 5 buffing/grinding wheels, several smaller shaping tools, about 500 lbs of rocks from around the US and world, and about 200 lbs of assorted jewelry making supplies like ring blanks, bezels, “fancy” metals for making jewelry, chains, and sheet pieces of metals. Also a lot of assorted “:stuff” for backing cabs, grits for tumbling, polishing compounds, and lots of other stuff including small kilns. All shelving, bins, and work benches would be included, as they will be using the space for a rec room. Coworker asked me for possible value, as he also wants to do something with all the rocks and gold he has found. Well, we are getting together on this one. I just might be helping empty out a basement this weekend. My cost would be sharing my knowledge of local rocks with him, helping him select proper grits and polishes, helping move the things out of the basement, telling him what everything is and letting him look through portions of my fields I cannot walk to. He will also take me to his local gold panning site, which is about 5 miles from my house. Sounds like a great deal to me.
He is checking everything out tomorrow night and making an offer for a package deal. The seller just wants the stuff gone. Hi dad last used it about 4 months ago, so all should be in working condition. We work together again on Thursday. I will be bringing samples of the rocks I am finding, but he thought the descriptions were unbelievable. I will also be sending him here to learn more, as this place is great for newbies.
