We are in San Antonio for my son's swim meet and had Friday off. So, I went to Llano to hunt rocks, while my wife and son went to the Riverwalk to hunt Pokémon! I don't really get the whole Pokémon Go thing, but it makes my wife's attitude about rock hunting alot more positive! Anyway, I drove to Llano and dropped in at Enchanted Rocks to get some direction on where to go. Frank, the owner, was extremely gracious and helpful with multiple locations and opportunities! If you ever get to Llano, you need to go see Frank. Because of my limited time, I went out to the Llano River, less than a mile from Frank's shop. I spent a couple hours hounding, until I ran out of water and had to get out of the heat! I found tons of granite, quartz, and flint, but was really focused on agates. Nice colors and patterns. Surprised at how small everything s though. I thought everything was supposed to be bigger in Texas.  |

Nice colors and patterns. Surprised at how small everything s though. I thought everything was supposed to be bigger in Texas. I guess I assumed everyone knew our money was bigger, too...... Yes, the river gravels do tend to be a little smaller. They didn't start here, but they got here as fast as they could! These gravels are much different than what I find on the San Jacinto. Neat post! You know, I've been in that rock shop numerous times and go for food at Llano regularly and had no idea there were even agates in the Llano River gravel. Never seen or heard of any at all even at the local rock shows. Thought it was all granite , feldspar and flint. Shoot, all the land being private, I had no idea you could even access the gravel beds without a boat. Looks like I'm gonna have to check it out sometime. Those agates are unusual too and really resemble those from Missouri further east. Just goes to show ya, ya never know till ya see it yourself....Mel

After Frank gave me directions and a good idea of what I'd find, I wasn't expecting much from the agates. You have to wade through a lot of quartz, flint, and granite, but they are there. I also found a few Bryozoans down there. Frank directed me to park at the end of Ash St. and walk down to the gravel beds. He said that he owns the mineral rights to that area, for whatever that's worth. Not sure if you need to ask Frank about hunting that area or not. You can tell him the guy that gave him a big chunk of crinoid limestone sent you. - Jeremy  |

Thanks for the info and map Jeremy. Have to give it a looksee next time I go for BBQ at Coopers. Only a few blocks from my favorite eatery. Very cool!!!!. I do find a little pet wood and some geodes even here on the ranch. Have always wondered why there are no sedimentary agates in the local limestone. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled every time I'm around a gravel bed I guess. Heck. I have a gravel filled stream bed on the back of my other lot. Next time I look for points and fossils I'll have to be more careful and look for agates too. Can't believe the local rockhounds are not collecting those agates even if they are smaller stones...Mel

Larry, I was there just a few months ago. The llanite deposit is still right by the road on Hwy 16 by Babyhead. Lots of beautiful solid stuff there but how you get into it is another question. Very solid "huge" blocks with nary a crack to get a chisel into. I don't know how the Hwy dept folks would feel about taking a heavy sledge to it and possibly blowing shards out into traffic either as it is right on the roadside. Don't know if there is a regulation about that or not. I know in some places, like Oregon, roadside collecting is a no no in some areas. Sure is pretty material, though very tough too. I broke the handle right off a heavy sledge there years ago. The only loose stuff is mainly weathered and porous but the dike itself is solid as all get out with lots of nice blue in it....Mel

I've always thought Llanite was a really cool rock and have enjoyed slabbing it! I've seen some beautiful spheres cut from it too. I've had about a 7-8 pound chunk (one of the last from my stash) of it sitting in line on my deck rail waiting for it's turn in the saw shop for a few weeks now. We lost a couple of shade trees last year that provided some afternoon cover for the saw building and without them the heat along with our piedmont Carolina humidity has made it insufferable out there until about 7:00 pm each evening which doesn't leave much slabbing time before dark. I'm starting to "jones" from lack of slabbing time! September can't get here soon enough! Larry C. |
