Not sure where to post this question, so I am putting it here. I am getting some rough slabbed by a local shop. He is taking 1/3 of the rough as payment. Is this the going rate? Usually this would not sound too bad but I am having him do a bunch of Tiffany Stone, Graveyard Point Plume, Parrot Wing etc. I figure he will end up with $$$ worth of slabs. I don't have a slab saw so it is what it is. Just asking. Thamks Vic

It's not unreasonable. Offer to pay him cash instead of slabs, he would probably be open to it. Others I've seen charge anywhere from $.50 to $1.00 per square inch of cut.

I guess that sounds about right. On the trade boards the deal is both slabbing and cabbing in exchange for 60% of the finished product.
If you are just slabbing and don't want to give up that much look to see if you have a local club where you can cut your own. Our club only charges us $5 an hour to use the saws.

Will the guy with the saw let you have first pick of the slabs ? If not he may take the best slabs for himself & leave you with junk. How well do you know & trust him ?

Back in the 1970s one of the older guys in our local mineral club would slab other folks' rough for them as long as he considered it material worth slabbing. And he would take every third slab for himself. That was fair as that way there was no cherry-picking of the best slabs.

I don't know him much at all. This will be the first trial session. I only took 25 lbs or so to him. We will wait and see. If all goes well I will take him more. If not live and learn. I am a trusting type person untill proven otherwise.

My local rock shop charges a flat rate of $5 per cut on his 18" saw. I don't know where you are located but with the high-end stuff it might be worth looking for a similar arrangement vs. the potential for cherry picking.

out of that 25 pounds of rough you will loose about 1/3 from the cutting. plus the 1/3 he will take .. only 1/3 for you. it not a bad deal, I have cut for people before and took 50 percent.

1/3 is very fair. I like the idea of every third slab.
