I'm going to do a project for some friends who are getting married to each other. They like my polished rocks, and think it would be cool to have a bunch of fairly small polished rocks, say about the size of a kiwi fruit or lemon (I'm thinking my favorite, Brazilian agate), and have their friends write things on them. Then they will use the rocks in an aquarium they plan to put together, so they will permanently have all these "memory stones" on display.
Question: How do you "write" on a stone so that it is permanent? Use an xacto knife and scratch it? Use an engraving tool? Any suggestions would be appreciated, as well as any comments on the overall idea.

This is going to seem absurd, however, make a rubber mat with the inscriptions cut out. Take it to a body shop and have the stone sandblasted. That is how they do grave stones. You can get sticky sheets of rubber at an art store. That is the easiest way and the best writing control.
