As stated a few weeks ago,the 14" saw I scored for free,is going to another good home.... It will be striped down bolt by bolt and rebuild, the way it needs to be... I know it will be done and running again....Thanks Larry, now I have more room in my shop for more rocks...LOL

Excellent! Hope we get to see the rebuild progress. Thinking Larry could have taken some of those rocks out of your way as well if space is an issue. There seems to be some room left in that truck!

It will be finished, but also a fairly long term project. The bar across the back of the moveable part of the vice is broken out and the pivot piece and screw are gone, will have to fab new everything. oregon offered photo and dimensional help if needed, it will, thank you. Ma says my time is mine after the kitchen is done, pretty good incentive to do that [getting close]. Then too, wives have a way of inventing new things to add to honey-do lists, told her I'm holding her to it. As far as more room in the pickup, yes there was, but room at home has its limits too. Thanks Mike.

quartz Responding here for oregon as I actually made the aforementioned part. First off, I only made the vise lock and handle for an 18" Frantom, not the heel. I think the heel is alright cracked as there should never be more pressure on it(as long as you pay attention clamping) maybe add a support. Essentially this is just 4 pieces of steel welded together with a round on the bottom to slide up under the vice heel and a point to catch the grooves on the vice. The worst thing about my design is probably the depth of the block that the handle goes through, its excessive and it makes you have to have a very long handle, and potential can lower your max clamping size. These pics are from last year just to show from when I finally got the job done... I don't have good pictures now but I will try to get some close-ups tomorrow with a ruler. This is in no way the best solution, but it still works great.

Thanks for the thought and pics., plan on mockups to pre-solve problems. Good reinforcement of existing part is a good idea, I whiffed that one, used to just remaking things. The saw is an 18, Mike must have hit the wrong number, thought only I did that.

Thanks for doing that, gives me things to think about. Hope to get going on that within a month. Not so much that you say your solution isn't the best, but that it works great, and that's what counts.

Yeah, looked like 18 or bigger to me too, the smaller FranToms had a flat bottom on the tub instead of the stepped oil saver. I wonder if Diamond Pacific has old stock castings in their trailer of parts. Pics of what you have/don't have might be helpful, a FranTom 18 is on my winter project list.

That's not so bad, The busted out piece of the stop on the vice piece could be used as is or a little clean up and bolt on replacement, unless you know a good tig welder. The piece littleoregon made would be possible too, but I wonder how close the replacement Highland Park casting from HP lapidary is. I normally never send anyone their way but it looks like maybe $60ish shipped for everything vs probably 6 plus labor hours to fabricate one.

Thanks for the thought, but given the reputation of everything else HP Lapidary, I'll make one. I can build a lot more strength into a part than a casting will provide, may or may not be needed, but comforting. I'll repair the cross bar area.

Well, okay, looks like you're not the only one with a parts problem. Piece from FranTom 18 on left, old HP 14 on right. According to HP China it's the same part 14, 16, 18 or 20 Notice how the original FranTom part has been pretzeled? Must not be a cast part to bend that far without breaking, can't begin to imagine how that could have been done. The HP part is a lot narrower, but seems to engage the vice base correctly. It would probably work with spacers on the piece of round stock that engages the vice, but being able to use the full width of theteeth on the vice base seems preferable to me.

Now I need to see if the part on my FranTom 24 is the same part for a template when I attempt to straighten the curly one.

Hard to imagine how that part could be bent that far, certainly not CI. By far better to use the whole width of the teeth. The HP part does look like a casting, prominent parting line. Hit wrong button too.
