I see numerous types of polish offered for sale, usually various metal oxides. I use cerium oxide (what my local rock shop sold me). Is any one type "best" or at least "better"?

Each different type of rock respones differently to different types of polishes. It really depends on the type of rock you're interested in tumbling. Sometimes, a number of diffenet types of polish will work on the same stone. At other time you'll need a specific polish for a given stone. From my own experience, I've noticed that the best polish for stones with a hardness of 6-7 is titanium oxide. For stones with a hardness of 5.5-7 cerium is good. For stone with a hardness of 5 or less, tin oxide is really your only hope. However, I havn't tried every type of polish on the market. Fell free to experiment.

I use cerium oxide on all the rocks that I have done, except for the first batch, which I think was Aluminum oxide.
