I'm starting to accumulate lots of sparkly rocks in boxes, and I want to be able to actually wear some as simple silver pendants or rings. Are any of you silversmiths willing to trade setting labor for a few custom faceted stones? PatrockjunquiemetalsmithradioDon(What happened to arrowheadave?)

I'm game, but I don't have much experience prong setting faceted stones. It might be a while before you get anything back in return while I learn how.

orrum , thanks for the tip! Most of the snap-on settings I've seen look a little flimsy, but I'll search a little harder. I'd forgotten about them actually. Don , I actually like the look of some bezel-set faceted stones too, and I actually prefer them when they're flush-set in rings because they're less likely to snag. I wear gloves at work and often go dancing; prongs are big pains for both of them. Here's a ring I actually own and wear often.

Bezel setting many types of stones rob them of light transmitted through the pavillion that make them sparkle. One would likely never bezel set a Diamond solitaire unless of very low quality as it would appear rather dull and unappealing. Colored stones should be no big problem and I have actually done a few very much like micellular's ring in the above pic. I have done exactly ONE snap in setting and swore to never use one again. They just don't have the eye appeal and durability of a quality setting. I have the tools needed to set all manner of faceted stones, but due to arthritic fingers, I seldom work with tiny stones
Michelle: Send me some pics of your "Sparkly rocks in boxes" and we will discuss setting options. If you no longer have my e mail address, I'll send it again in a PM

Bezel vs prong for good light return makes a lot of sense, radio. Sending you a message!
