Awesome pictures, awesome bots. I love the brain shaped rock on a plate near the end. That was some kind of a fungus Rob. Can't remember the ID. Some unrelated photos got mixed in with that set lol.

melhill1659The way I figured out what those denizens were was when I saw a ~6 footer scooting up the shallow rapids half out of water. Always thought the reflections were large alligator gar, but gar don't normally reflect light. Tiger sharks come up the Suwannee River but rarely as far up river as I hunt coral. Thankfully they were not sharing the river. The flat shiny sides of a sturgeon ! Yes, that was the cause, made sense when I seen the sturgeon in the shoals. What's that ZZ Top song about pink sunglasses ?

Holy Hell, that'll knock ya outta the saddle. Must look like a submarine underwater, I'd like to see it airborne. The water is super clear but dyed whiskey colored w/tannins. Only when sun is bold can you see deep. Reflected light travels thru it well but seeing a large creature is difficult when river bottom is dark. Late summer is when they head up the rivers, my time spent collecting at that time of the year. I knew from the reflections they were huge fish, just avoided thinking about it lol. Some get real big ![](https://stupidknews.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/sturgeon-1.jpg) I hunt mostly on the Withlacoochee. Those fish come a long way from the Gulf. There must be 40 shallow shoals(most are coral exposures) in the Withlacochee starting at Suwannee confluence. I was seeing them on the Georgia side of the Withlacoochee ~150 river miles from the Gulf ! ![](http://nc.water.usgs.gov/projects/FWS_water_needs/icons/fig1-c.gif) These are the sections of river where coral is found. Where the number 2315550 is exists a giant potash mine. It is a hill that the river looped around. A hill that was a shallow spot that coral grew on during an ancient ocean. ![](https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/309/32879153690_4f1b8ef7c9_o.jpg)

Whenever you post pictures of coral hunting, I always wonder what sort of tropical critters, are,in the water with you. There's nothing to worry about here. I messed with a water snake in Lake Huron once, but they're not venomous. Nothing really scary here. So, other than sharks (as if that's not bad enough), what do you have to worry about there? Gators? Water moccasins?

Well, a third of it anyway. I'm gonna have to call Denise and thank her for the dish towel that you sent me something wrapped in!

I messed with a water snake in Lake Huron once, but they're not venomous. Nothing really scary here. So, other than sharks (as if that's not bad enough), what do you have to worry about there? Gators? Water moccasins? In that river the Moccasins X10. You get bit by not seeing them and disturbing them. Don't see many though. Rocks in river shorelines are perfect habitats for Moccasins. Never seen a big gator in those rivers. Florida lakes a different animal. Many Moccasins. Many big gators. The Moccasin's in Florida lakes are a constant threat. Too common. 4 times have had them bite and lock on to my waders while harvesting aquatic plants, seeds and cuttings. They are attracted to me when I am in shallow water harvesting plants. I use a knife to cut plants and their roots. A Moccasin's head will come up to watch. I have taken the knife and chopped their heads off on several occasions by swinging it like a machete. One time I was barefoot and stepped on the head and the fang pierced my heel and it got infected. Only time ever infected w/snake poison. The lake gators ? I'm not sure about them. I have waded thru knee deep water and woken them on several occasions. Some looked like 12 footers. Harvesting plants here ![](https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8050/29091192182_af53d22784_c.jpg) These guys head out to deep water hopefully when wading and collecting. Stay out of water in August or you may be viewed as competition. They will raise their tails and slap the water in most cases as a warning. ![](https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8463/28577721573_c15f934b81_b.jpg) I had a large gator pop up and watch me from 30 feet away one August. I was 300 feet away from shore or kayak. Over time I moved closer to kayak he went under. I think he was flipping a coin on doing me. He slapped the water 3 times. Being in a boat is a safe. Wading with them is not, but they rarely attack. Water snakes ? Thankfully they are not very poisonous. That is the meanest creature in the water. Giant water bugs have caused more damage to me than any other critter. They have a nasty way of injecting poison.

I would not enjoy rock hunting with that stuff in the water with me. I wonder if you have the same giant water bugs that we have. I've heard that ours have the most painful bite of any insect. The biology teacher at our high school let one bite him once just to see what it felt like. He only did it once. I've never heard of anyone else getting bit. I caught one right outside our school on the pavement for my daughter's biology class bug collection. I was careful not to pick it up with bare hands though.

Friggen fresh water dinosaur that grow 12+ feet in there lifetime. These aren't fish that were just born, last week, last year, last decade, last half century. "These were born around the time of the start of Canada. Haha. Fished many times for salmon out of that river, never Sturgeon, also a fantastic river for finding gold and jade. A 19-year-old angler from Atlanta, Ga, fishing with his father for the first time, is the fourth person in less than two years to catch a giant Fraser River sturgeon. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/giant-sturgeon-caught-on-fraser-river-again-1.2676051

Damn southern fisherman spiritstone. Can't believe he was the one that happened on a sturgeon up your way. How to catch such a large monster on a small rig ? must have had a reel with 500 yards of line.

Couldnt imagine hooking into something that large with small tackle, snap goes the rod, Let alone being in a kayak or 12 foot aluminum boat.

Hell, put a enough sweet batter on it and a shoe is delicious.

I spoke with a few guys fishing for Sturgeon over the years, and was told some of the best bait for landing them is "dead chicken" on the hook.

Caught a 80 pound Goliath Grouper 2 summers ago off the coast of Islamorada in the Key's. Not to hard to load that up along with the snake boots and rock gear. That is when I get invited along on yalls next excursion! 👷🏻♀️ Did you watch the I Love Lucy Christmas special??? SQUIRREL

Apparently catching them is few and far between.

...and that wasn't meant for the lady with the yardstick!!
