1000 and tripoli?
Our local rock shop doesn't carry either.

I asked this same question a week or so ago. Sandsman said he gets his 1000 at the Rockshed. I think it was about $12 a pound. I think the tripoli was cheaper but last time I looked he was out of stock.

I got my 1000 grit from 'MinersMall'. But I paid $19.00 a pound. www.minersmall.com/site.htmlUnder 'Treasure Hunting' <click> 'MinersMall General Store, then <click>Abrasives & Polishes in the right hand column. At least the service was good Kingsley North has it for $12.00 a pound. www.kingsleynorth.com/gradedsc.html

My 1000 grit has always been pure white aluminum oxide, I suppose. Could be wrong, but it works well.

Yep- i see what ya mean. I don't know all that much about polish to tell by looking at it. But if it works and I can see an improvement I'll use it, whether it is gray, or white, or blue or green. ;D I don't think, know the Rock Shed wouldn't advertise it and sell it if it wasn't 1000 grit like it says.

Hey John. The 1000g I got from my local rock shop is grey, and yes, it makes a world of difference in the final polish. I'll take this time to thank James for letting us know about using the 1000g just before polish. Thanks James!!

The Rockshed advert says that their 1000 grit is far softer stones. Will it also work with the hard stuff. Can it be re-used? If it's grit I would guess not. Just wishful thinking. John how much of the 1000 grit do you use in your 6 lb tumbler?

I got my 1000 grit and tripoli from The Rock Shed. I found that it did make a difference in how it polished my last batch.

1000 is a must for softer stone. It does however, make a difference on harder stones too.
