I know this is a bit on the big side for jewelry but it's the only forum that fits. I got an anvil for $5.00 at a sale yesterday, and I'm trying to get ID info. Curious if the makers mark means anything to anybody. It's cast with a hardened steel top welded on. I might polish the top and use it for bracelets and big silver or copper pieces, but it's more likely that I will use it for tool making as I have a couple smaller anvils and some RR track anvils.

I think that would make a nice bracelet mandrel. I say polish it up. I don't know anything about the maker marks though.

cant really help with the id. but I can tell you what they will say "its cast and no good" when I see a cast anvil with steel top my mind goes straight to 2 manufacturers fisher and Vulcan. but ive never seen a Vulcan with the mark under the tail in the waist. usually they say Vulcan right along the side. the older sought after wrought iron ones have an arm and hammer on them. ive owned 3 myself that I got cheap (1 for free)all were cast models that I gave to beginers years ago. unless your going to do some heavy blacksmithing though it will work just fine.

Of course if you don't want to pound out things on it there is always anvil shooting which always grabs my attention.

My guess is 350 pounds and that it is 3 feet long or a little more. The "V" could stand for Vulcan. It looks to be in pretty good shape from here. It looks about the same size as the one I use at the Minnesota State Fair.
Could it be roman numeral V for 50 pounds ?
Made in Viet Nam
V for Viking from Nordic sailing fleet.
V for very hard top
V for vindicating steel
V for vintage

I had no idea what was meant by anvil firing until I saw the Alabama Cathedral Shot in action. 5$ anvil is an awesome deal.

I remember about 15 years ago when abana threatened to revoke the charters of several southern chapters if they did anvil shoots. and the chapters basically told them go ahead they didn't care and weren't going to stop. my how times have changed. part that upsets me is they shoot anvils that are better than half the anvils ive seen guys using for the intended purpose.
