Hi All, I have some Thomsonite from Grand Marais, Minnesota and Garnet from near Frank, AB. Canada. Do any of you know how to get it out of the base rock without destroying it? Thank you all in advance and I look forward to hearing from you! I snapped a couple of pictures, let me know if this link gets you to them. Computers are not my strong point! www.dropbox.com/sh/y751nwocr1j62ls/AABRGaW3N_HGRfZuK2L-R8NNa?dl=0Happy rockhounding.................Jeff

"Without destroying it"
The base rock? Define "it".

"Without destroying it" The base rock? Define it. Thinking he means saving the Thomsonite and not the matrix , probably basalt .

Thank you for the advice!
Sorry I was not very clear, I want to remove the thomsonite and garnet from the base rock. My wife does think the base rock is basalt. One more question for you, What dremel tool do you use?
I have looked online and found this one. Dremel 4000 – 2/30 rotary with flex shaft attachment.
Since I need to purchase one, I would like to buy one that will do the job right!
Thank you again for helping me out! I hope someday I can return the help!

How big is the budget?
Look at foredom tools. More horsepower, better longevity....
Exact Dremel model isn't a worth worrying about. The power tool is less important than the bits you put in them. Try jadecarver.com for those.

Yes, Foredoms are stronger. I have Foredom TX, and yes, you need the flex shaft and hand piece.
Agree that jadecarver.com is good. Dave Clayton is helpful.
Btw, welcome from California.

Hi All,
The Foredom tools look like they would work well!
I like to do things right the first time.
Thank you for pointing me in the right direction!

Good luck on getting the Thomsonite out without destroying it. Brown matrix not as hard as the darker blue to black matrix. Sometimes a chisel to open up the stone if it is the softer brown. I have also used an ingraving tool, small air hammer and am still experimenting. I cut and set a lot of the Thomsonite in the matrix.
