General question about what might have caused all the pitting on this. It reminds me of Hixton silicified sandstone (Hixton Quartzite). The crystalline structure is fine and very tight. This is a heavy rock for its size of 6” x 3 ¾ x 2 1/4. The last photo also shows a point I have that was ID’d as being made with Hixton Quartzite. Dated to 7000 to 4500 BC, Aqua Plano Period. The manufacturer heat treated the Quartzite to make it easier to work with, but this process also intensified the color. Do not know if my rock is Hixton or not, but shows the characteristics. Since this material is found all over the Country, anything is possible. Another thought is that the rock traveled here via Glacial Lake Wisconsin, or via person. Insights on the pitting appreciated. I have many other pieces of Quartzite, but none are pitted like this. 1 by Fernwood Acres, on Flickr 2 by Fernwood Acres, on Flickr 7 by Fernwood Acres, on Flickr with point by Fernwood Acres, on Flickr
