Intarsia is a good way to use your leftover itty-bitty pieces. Recently took a six hour class on how to do this. I like the process and the outcome. Backside is basenite. Black frame in front is jade. White is magnesite. Blue is Victoria Stone Pink is jasper? IMG_2178 by Pat, on Flickr After making this, I look at rocks in an entirely different light. I'm gathering tools and rocks pieces to make the next one. I want to go back to 600 grit on flat lap to delete a few rough spots. Not today. It's 100 in the shed. Thanks.

Nice piece. I have never done it with stone before, only wood.

Good skill to have. It opens up all kinds of options and I suppose your imagination is the main limit. Look forward to your next creation.

Bautiful! Intarsia is super fun. If you're detail oriented. ;-)

Good job Pat. Great looking result but I just don't have the patience for that kind of work. Hope to see more of your creations soon.

Very nice, I'm not brave enough to try so many different hardness's. I have a walk through in the works as well, won't be a tutorial, my skill level taint there yet.

I'm eager to see my next creation, too!😀 It's hard to explain but the two tasks require different kinds of patience. I guess it's manipulating and gluing all those tiny bits that I don't like, though I can be supremely patient at things like setting stones that don't want to be set and other fussy work. As I say, it's hard to explain.

Rockoonz The different hardnesses didn't seem to be a problem. Softest material was the magnesite. I think my little intarsia tutorial will be more like a walk-through, too. Lots of little steps, but nothing difficult like preparing a bezel for soldering!
