Have been doing tons of research and experimenting with this.
Most experiments utilized a hack saw, files and my Dremel, which has a hole drilling, diamond bit stuck in it. Also sealed the stones with my go to stone sealer. Initial results were not bad.
Since I am doing extensive research on purchasing a fairly complete lapidary/jewelry set-up, do have some questions.
Can this be gently tumbled in a vibe? No other stones included. What about using a cabbing machine or flat lap to polish?
My ultimate goal would be to create cabs which also include a focal stone setting within them. Played around with Turquoise and it is stunning. Kinda like the Petoskey stone pendants I am making.
These would be used for pendants, rings and bracelets. So, if larger stones were broken in the vibe, they could be used for rings.
Everyone local is loving the Spec Hema, so feel this is worth pursuing.
Please be honest and tell me if I am nuts, OK?
My past lapidary experience was with very primitive, by today's standards, equipment. Dremel, toy tumbler, lots of sandpaper and files. But, skills were refined to utilize Traditional Navajo techniques for making beautiful items with simple tools and techniques. Am sometimes at a loss understanding the ins and outs of modern equipment.
Many here have been a huge help with equipment advice. Also, I have spent endless hours reading past posts and tutorials. The selection of grits/polishes are overwhelming. Learning that some are better for specific stones, especially related to Mohs and undercut potential. learning all of the safety measures needed. Feel fortunate, that I have a great, inside utility room to establish the "shop" in, which includes natural lightning, a door, table/bench space, plenty of electric, hot/cold water and an easily adaptable utility sink for sludge drainage either direct to pail inside or outside to a pail/yard.
Will not list specific people, but you know who you are and thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
Any advice on the Spec Hema appreciated.
